How age is calculated
Age is the time between your date of birth and a given date, usually today. The calculator first counts how many full years have passed, then the full months after your last birthday, and finally the days left over.
For example, someone born on 15 August 1995 is 31 years, 1 month and 16 days old on 1 October 2026.
When you need an exact age
- Exams and government jobs: UPSC, SSC, banking and state exams set age limits as on a specific cut-off date.
- School admission: minimum age for nursery or Class 1 is checked against a date such as 31 March.
- Retirement and pension: know exactly when you reach 58, 60 or 65.
- Insurance and loans: premiums and eligibility depend on your age on the policy or application date.
Leap years
A year has 365 days, or 366 in a leap year. Leap years fall every four years, except century years not divisible by 400, which is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. The calculator handles all of this for you.
